"Empowering Women in the Cannabis Industry: A Conversation with Rachel Garland"

Summer: Rachel, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us today! I know you are a very busy woman, and I am honored that you took the time to do this.  Can you share a bit about your background and how you got involved in the cannabis industry?

Rachel: Absolutely. I started in the cannabis industry in 2015 as a freelance writer and marketer. Before that, I was working at a startup where I wore many hats. I did everything from sales and marketing to web design and customer service. My professional journey took an exciting turn when I decided to explore freelancing. This led me to the cannabis industry. I had a passion for this plant and realized there was a need for educational and promotional content. I started by creating content that focused on the benefits of cannabis, the science behind it, and the stories of people whose lives were changed by it. I had the opportunity to interview some of the world’s leading cannabis experts, scientists, doctors, and entrepreneurs. I’m grateful for those early experiences. I was learning and sharing what I was learning. Over time, I built my portfolio up and started getting bigger results for my clients. As the industry evolved so did the needs of the market. I expanded from freelancer to agency owner as the co-founder and CEO of Blaze It Media.

Summer: What were some of the unique challenges you faced as a woman in the cannabis industry, and how did you overcome them?

Rachel: From facing discrimination to dealing with online trolls, it wasn’t always easy. However, I refused to let it hold me back. While I’ve had a few negative experiences, I’ve had far more positive ones. The beautiful thing about this plant is that it brings people together. That’s part of what makes the cannabis industry so unique. And so special. Something I’ve learned? Lead with love, compassion, and courage.

Summer: Can you share a success story or a project you're particularly proud of?

Rachel: One of my proudest moments was legally selling cannabis products online starting in 2017. Since then, we've helped numerous clients establish successful brands, open online storefronts, and scale their businesses. It’s been a rewarding journey creating and building cannabis brands from the ground up!

Summer: How have you seen the cannabis industry change over the years, particularly in terms of gender diversity?

Rachel: Over the years, I’ve witnessed a positive shift towards greater gender diversity

in the cannabis industry. More women are entering the industry, and companies are starting to recognize the importance of female representation. However, there's still work to be done to ensure equal opportunities for women in leadership positions.

Summer: What advice would you give to other women looking to enter the cannabis industry?

Rachel: My advice to women looking to enter the cannabis industry is to focus on their areas of expertise and start by solving one problem. This industry is incredibly challenging. Everything a “normal” business can do is more difficult for cannabis companies - from banking to taxes to marketing. And that’s just scratching the surface. This is why it’s so important to get help from experts and invest in self-growth. Above all? Don't let fear hold you back. Remember, every journey starts with a single step.

Summer: Where do you see the cannabis industry heading in the next 5 years, and what role do you hope to play in that future?

Rachel: I believe the cannabis industry will continue to grow and expand in the next five years, with more opportunities for positive change and wider access to cannabis-related products and services. The role I hope to play is contributing to a more inclusive and empowered future through Blaze It Media.

Rachel: The woman who has inspired me the most is my mom. She was a true free spirit who lived her life with courage and love. Born in 1950, she grew up in a time when women's career options were far more limited. Despite societal expectations, my mom had different dreams. She had a deep passion for art and a desire to explore the world.

She embarked on a career as an art curator for the Dallas Museum of Art, which allowed her to travel extensively throughout Europe and even to Japan. Her adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace new experiences opened doors to a world of opportunities.

Later in life, my mom made a significant career change. In her 50s, she decided to pursue nursing, showcasing her resilience and determination to continue learning and growing. This aspect of her character has had a profound impact on me and how I approach my own career.

Sadly, my mom's life was cut short by lung cancer. But her legacy of fearlessness and love continues to inspire me every day. I am grateful for the lessons she taught me and the incredible women who have shaped my journey.

Summer: Rachel, thank you for sharing such a touching tribute to your mother. It's clear that her adventurous spirit and determination have left a lasting impact on you.
